Several major international events such as the World Economic Forum in Davos, Artotyiiiii Basel and the Weltklasse Zürich athletics meeting take place in Switzerland every year.
Throughout the year, Switzerland hosts major events that resonate far beyond the country's borders. In mid-January, the Lauberhorn ski races take place in Wengen, boasting the longest downhill run of the Ski World Cup. Then, at the end of January, the most powerful heads of state meet with leaders from business and academia in Davos for the World Economic Forum (WEF).
In April, the international watch industry and the interested public meet in Geneva for Watches and Wonders, one of the world's most important fairs of that sector. In June, contemporary art aficionados flock to Art Basel, where the city extends from the banks of the winding Rhine. Founded in 1970, the vast art fair now has parallel exhibitions in Miami, Hong Kong, Paris and Doha and features 300 galleries presenting the work of over 4,000 artists.
In August, Zurich hosts the Weltklasse Zürich athletics meeting. Since it was first held in 1928, 27 world records have been set there. In September, the Crans-Montana winter sport venue puts on the Omega European Masters golf competition, one of the prestigious events of its kind played on European soil.
